Cleaning Up My Internet Mess

It took awhile for me to pay attention to all of this, but today I finally cleaned up my web address messes.

Last summer I had all of these grand plans about websites I was going to start and keep on top of.  I was going to blog, tweet, Google+, and be a tech maven.  I purchased custom domain names, started new pages, and promptly got in over my head.  I didn't think that while I purchased domain names that I needed to have my stuff hosted elsewhere.  Frankly, there's a lot I didn't know.  There's a lot I still don't know.  Today, after playing in the internet sandbox the last few months, I finally straightened up my stuff:

• I started this blog using Blogger
• I reassigned my 2 domain names to things that make sense:
• www.coolchemteacher.org (my teaching site) and www.coolchemgal.com (this blog)
• I updated If This Then That to help me monitor all of this stuff and reduce my need to cross-post.  When I post here it will automatically post to Google+, Twitter and Facebook.

If you haven't checked out If This Then That and you are a heavy web user, then you need to do so.  I am going to write a separate post about it.  I am still very much a novice user, but as I get more into it, the more I am loving IFTTT.  I want them to handle everything for me!

Essentially my big lessons learned are this: be careful before you spend money of tech-type things - the things you think you need may not be exactly right after you learn a little more.  Also, play with the free tools a lot!  you can really get a feel for how things are before you start shelling out your hard-earned money.  The internet will nickel and dime you if you let it.
